“Her voice had an undercurrent of aggression, but everything she said was careful, like she strained her words through some filter of cheerfulness in the back of her throat. It reminded Alexi of the way refugees first talked when they made it to Chicago; everything they said was so considered. "I made breakfast." It was a flat statement. She was used to people reacting to what she said, used to them reacting with some sort of physical movement or activity after she spoke.”

Ivan Faute recently graduated from the Program for Writers at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His prose has appeared in a variety of on-line and print journals and plays have been produced in Chicago, New York, and San Diego. He currently lives in Chicago with two rat terriers.
