Sample from This Is How We Will Live, Now That We Are Free
“Her voice had an undercurrent of aggression, but everything she said was careful, like she strained her words through some filter of cheerfulness in the back of her throat. It reminded Alexi of the way refugees first talked when they made it to Chicago; everything they said was so considered. "I made breakfast." It was a flat statement. She was used to people reacting to what she said, used to them reacting with some sort of physical movement or activity after she spoke.”
